“Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.” Habakkuk 6:3
God cannot behold or look on evil or iniquity. When we consider that we have done wrongly, that we are guilty of evil and participants in iniquity, the question naturally arises, “How can he behold us? How can he look on us?” The answer is that in his Son, the perfect Lamb of God, on whom all our guilt was laid, he looks at us as he looks upon the Lord Jesus, as pure and clean because Jesus is our substitute.
As Jesus hung on the cross, the guilty weight of all our sin on him, God looked away from him. The pain of the loss of God’s approval as Jesus took our sin on himself was so great that Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”. He suffered for you so that you would believe on him, and so that God would find you acceptable in his sight. Will you believe on Jesus today?
